The renovation and transformation of this 3-star hotel, originally constructed in 1978, was initiated after its acquisition by Columbia Hotels following six years of unsuccessful operation. Commissioned to make strategic adjustments and design a long-term master plan, the aim was to elevate the existing hotel and adjacent land into a distinguished beach resort. Following the successful completion of the new Columbia Resort in 2005, the decision was made to renovate and extend the original hotel to match the same level of luxury and refinement.
The architectural scope of the project spanned nine months and involved a series of comprehensive interventions. The 1970s concrete structure was carefully reinforced to meet modern standards of durability and safety, while maintaining the integrity of the original building.
Existing balconies, which were underutilized, were integrated into the room layouts to optimize space and enhance guest comfort. A key architectural feature of the design was the introduction of a steel saddle-like structure, suspended from the roof, which created new balconies that visually lightened the mass of the building and added a contemporary aesthetic to the otherwise utilitarian structure.
The public areas, including the lobby, lounges, and dining spaces, were reimagined to provide a sense of openness and luxury, with high-quality finishes and refined details. The repositioning of essential back-of-house facilities—such as the kitchens, storerooms, and service areas—was a critical part of the design, ensuring that the operational efficiency of the hotel was greatly improved without compromising guest experience. These spaces were equipped to the highest standards, featuring modern systems and materials that align with the resort's upscale service offering.
Throughout the design, a strong emphasis was placed on creating a cohesive architectural and interior experience. All furniture and soft furnishings were meticulously sourced by Thesis Design Showrooms, ensuring a harmonious atmosphere across the entire hotel. The design philosophy centred around combining functionality with elegance, preserving the building’s historical character while introducing a fresh, contemporary approach to the spaces.
The successful renovation of this beach hotel was not merely an update of outdated systems, but a thoughtful architectural reimagining that elevated it to a modern, luxurious standard, creating a seamless transition between the old and the new within the resort complex.
