The design for this elementary school seeks to establish a balanced relationship between the scale of the surrounding context, which includes both small-scale housing and the large, monolithic structures of the nearby police and telecommunications headquarters. The layout is organized in distinct blocks, carefully positioned to mediate between these contrasting scales, while ensuring that the school’s design is both functional and harmonious with its surroundings.
The configuration of courtyards between the blocks provides both aesthetic and functional benefits. These gardens, shaded by mature trees, not only create inviting outdoor spaces for students but also act as effective acoustic buffers, isolating the classrooms from the noise of the busy streets surrounding the site. These green spaces, along with their high tree canopy, contribute to a tranquil atmosphere conducive to learning.
The building's orientation takes full advantage of passive design principles, with deep overhangs strategically placed to shade the interior spaces from the harsh southern sun. This design choice helps regulate indoor temperatures and reduces energy consumption by minimizing the need for air conditioning.
The sports ground is located to the east of the site, ensuring that the playing fields benefit from optimal exposure to sunlight. The school’s library and main hall are positioned to form spectator terraces that overlook both the sports field and the central courtyard.
This dual-purpose space creates a sense of connection between the various functions of the school, while offering views that foster interaction between the students, teachers, and the wider community.
The overall composition of the project emphasizes the importance of creating a nurturing, well-connected environment for learning, while respecting the larger urban context and promoting sustainable, climate-responsive design.
