NICOSIA - CYPRUS

COMPETITION ENTRY

WORKSPACE

This competition entry for the regional head office of the Cyprus Electricity Authority in Nicosia was developed in response to the need to maintain and restore the existing office building, which was to be integrated into the new design.
The proposal addresses the site’s corner with a rounded façade, providing a dynamic visual presence that complements the surrounding urban context.

A landmark tower with an antenna symbolizes the technical services offered by the authority, reinforcing the building’s role as a central hub for energy and innovation. The design prioritizes floor-to-ceiling glazing over traditional curtain walling, creating a transparent and open architectural expression while allowing for abundant natural light.

Linear south-facing balconies are incorporated into the design, serving multiple functions—they provide easy cleaning access, offer shading, and contribute to the cooling of the building, enhancing its overall environmental performance.

The design carefully ensures that both the existing and new buildings share the same materials and orientation, creating a cohesive architectural identity. This strategy ensures that the two structures appear as one unified entity, maintaining continuity and harmony between the old and the new.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design, with a focus on energy efficiency. The building's voids were designed to recover and renew energy, contributing to the building's overall performance. The south-facing facades and roofs were equipped with photovoltaic panels, effectively harnessing solar energy to supplement the building’s power needs.
This integration of renewable energy sources helped minimize the environmental impact while ensuring a future-proof design that could adapt to changing energy demands and technologies.
