To cater to our client's frequent international transport needs, particularly his piloting of his own jet plane in and out of Cyprus, we embarked on designing a hangar facility located at Paphos International Airport. The hangar responds to both functional and climatic demands.
With summer temperatures in Cyprus often reaching 50°C, thermal protection was a key design driver. The building envelope was designed to minimize heat gain and provide a controlled internal environment, helping to preserve the condition of the aircraft and sensitive equipment. A custom air management system was developed to ensure good air quality within the hangar, offering filtration, cooling, and dust control in a balanced and efficient manner.
The form of the hangar—a low-profile wedge—was a considered response to the aircraft’s proportions, particularly its 10-meter-high tail and 25-meter wingspan. By tightly shaping the building around the aircraft’s footprint, the overall volume was reduced, allowing for better environmental control and lower energy demands.
In both structural and material terms, the design emphasizes clarity and efficiency. A straightforward steel structure and modular cladding system were selected for their durability, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for local fabrication and assembly. The result is a clean and purposeful building that meets the client’s needs without unnecessary complexity.
The project is set to evolve with a second phase: the development of a larger adjacent hangar capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330 for short-term stays and light maintenance. This upcoming facility will also house office and workshop space for a permanent team of 10 staff members.
In keeping with the design approach of the first hangar, the new structure will adopt the same formal language, profiles, and material palette, resulting in two visually aligned and cohesive buildings that maintain a restrained and elegant presence within the airport context.
