Eptagonia Cultural Square

LIMASSOL - CYPRUS

COMPETITION ENTRY

CULTURAL

The competition brief for the redesign of the main square in the village of Eptagonia, located on the outskirts of Limassol, called for an integrated and multifunctional public space that would serve the village community.

The proposed design responds to this by creating a series of interconnected stone buildings arranged along the perimeter of the site, framing a central open space. This configuration forms a natural square at the heart of the site, offering a communal gathering point.

The buildings are designed to host a variety of functions, including cultural exhibition areas, small venue spaces, cafes, and administrative offices for the village municipality. These spaces are organized to encourage both community engagement and the celebration of local culture, with flexibility in their use for diverse activities.

One of the key features of the design is the use of the entire roofscape as a botanical and herb garden. This green roof provides an educational space for local schools and universities, fostering learning in farming and horticulture. The roofs serve not only as functional landscapes but also as visual and environmental assets that contribute to the sustainability of the site.

At the centre of the square, the hard landscaping is sculpted to step down, creating a sunken space that functions as a natural amphitheatre. This space is designed to host local events and performances, providing an adaptable area for cultural activities throughout the year.
The carefully considered design of the square integrates architectural form with the natural landscape, creating a harmonious and functional space that serves as a central point for both social and educational activities in the village.
