COMPLETED 2018

DESIGN

This project evolved from a long-term working and personal relationship with our client in Montenegro, beginning with the design of his holiday home, Villa Monte, in 2013. As the family expanded with the arrival of grandchildren, the client envisioned new projects that would enhance his estate, creating new shared experiences for summer family gatherings.

The brief initially called for a children's playground, but through discussions, we proposed a more integrated approach—designing a structure that could be enjoyed by both children and parents. This led to the concept of a half-sunken pirate ship, positioned in the main lawn adjacent to the house. Developed through sketches and physical models, the design tells a story that resonates across generations.

The 25 meter play ship is constructed with a primary structure of solid iroko timber, clad with composite timber boards that allow both for flexibility in shaping the curved hull and durability to withstand the elements.

At the stern, the rudder functions as an entrance to a small classroom/playroom, incorporating decorative elements inspired by traditional pirate ships. At the bow, the ship’s inclined form is utilized to create a crèche/cabin resting area, enhancing the immersive experience for children.

Above deck, the pirate ship incorporates detailed craftsmanship with practical and playful elements. The perimeter railings feature hand-carved timber mouldings, interrupted by cannons designed to hold balloon 'cannonballs' that 'explode' when loaded and fired. A rope drawbridge connects the two structures and leads to a slide that shoots you down back to the grass lawn, adding an element interaction.

The masts include rigging with custom timber pulleys and yacht-inspired details, reflecting a marine design influence. To enhance the nautical theme, the deck features brass lanterns, a solid wood helm, and a ship’s compass binnacle, adding to the overall character of the space.

As with our previous projects for this villa, the entire structure was prefabricated off-site in Cyprus, allowing for precise detailing and seamless connections. Once completed, it was dismantled, carefully labelled and packed into two 40-foot containers for shipment to Montenegro.

Our team of carpenters and installers completed the on-site assembly in 15 days, delivering the finished project—ready to be christened by the client’s grandchildren as the Black Diamond.
