This beachfront restaurant is situated in the heart of Curium Bay, an area rich in historic antiquities and bordered by a long sandy beach known for its sea sports activities. The main challenge of the project was to design a structure capable of withstanding the extreme weather conditions, particularly the strong onshore winds and tidal waves, which the existing building is frequently exposed to, especially during the winter months.
A series of overlapping oval-shaped canopies extend across the building, providing both shading and wind protection. The canopy design draws inspiration from nautical and aeronautical principles, with a rigid steel frame supported by metal columns. The canopies are securely fixed to the existing building through precisely detailed brackets, ensuring structural integrity and a seamless integration with the overall architectural composition.
The interior layout was reconfigured to maximize the dining areas and improve the flow of service traffic between customers and staff. A custom-designed wire mesh structure with integrated pebbles was introduced to conceal the existing columns, creating a dynamic visual element. This structure also functions as a light feature, casting subtle shadows throughout the space, while an open fireplace is incorporated into the design, adding warmth and a focal point to the interior environment.
The project incorporates a second phase that expands the dining areas and canopies onto the roof of the existing building. A new glass lift is introduced, providing panoramic views of the historic site and the sea, while offering a seamless connection between the existing and extended spaces. This addition not only enhances the functionality of the building but also reinforces its integration with the surrounding landscape and architectural context.
