Pedestrian Footbridge

NICOSIA - CYPRUS

COMPETITION ENTRY

CULTURAL

This pedestrian footbridge was part of a competition proposal aimed at connecting a highly developed residential area with schools and other facilities across a busy avenue, providing safe passage for pedestrians while also enhancing the urban landscape. The bridge serves as a symbolic gateway for all visitors entering Nicosia from the south, marking an important entry point to the city.

The design of the bridge is inspired by organic forms, taking cues from natural structures. The footbridge is composed of small, interlocking parts that come together in a way that mimics a spine, creating a flowing, bone-like system. This organic structure is not only visually striking but also functional, allowing for an efficient and cost-effective assembly.

Suspension rods extend from two asymmetric masts, providing the necessary support and stability to the structure. These masts act as central anchor points for the bridge, bracing the entire system while maintaining a dynamic, sculptural form. The bridge is anchored on both sides of the busy road by two concrete plinth ramps, ensuring its structural integrity while allowing for smooth transitions from the pedestrian areas to the bridge itself.

The design blends aesthetics with functionality, creating a striking piece of architecture that serves as both a practical solution for pedestrian movement and a visual landmark for the city.
