Over the years, Vakis Associates has had the ongoing opportunity to collaborate with Columbia Restaurants on a series of Pizza Express locations across Cyprus. Each project has presented a unique challenge and a fresh opportunity to reinterpret the brand’s identity within the local urban context, while staying true to its global character.
These restaurants, situated in various towns including Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos, are typically full refurbishments of pre-existing properties leased by the client. Our task involves transforming these often outdated or unsuitable spaces into vibrant, welcoming dining environments that support both operational efficiency and guest experience.
Each Pizza Express project begins with a deep evaluation of the existing property. These buildings often vary significantly in architectural character, dimensions, and spatial constraints. This diversity necessitates a flexible and highly adaptive design approach. While the core brand principles remain consistent, our designs respond directly to each building's specific conditions — from structural quirks and ceiling heights to lighting availability and street visibility.
The spatial layout is always led by operational priorities. A major part of our design work is focused on the intelligent separation and articulation of front-of-house and back-of-house areas. This ensures seamless workflow, minimizes staff travel distances, and creates a clear and intuitive customer journey from entry to seating to service. Kitchen locations are optimized not only for utility connections but also for speed of service and visual containment or exposure, depending on the restaurant concept.
In summary, the Pizza Express projects represent a long-term, strategic partnership between Vakis Associates and Columbia Restaurants. Our design process combines practical problem-solving with a clear architectural narrative, consistently delivering spaces that are efficient, branded, and engaging for diners across Cyprus.
