RESTORATION

Vakis Associates was entrusted by a repeat client for the complete refurbishment of a 450sq.m. duplex apartment spanning over two floors, nestled in the heart of Belgravia in Central London.
Drawing inspiration from the Georgian era, the interior design and architectural elements of the apartment are meticulously curated with a contemporary infusion, all the while honouring the Grade II listed status of this esteemed property.

The brief of this project was to create a home that can be an entertaining space for the mature couple, but also be suitable for when the whole family meet together in London. The clients wanted a mix of period features and contemporary living with all the modern day amenities and use of smart technology features for enhanced convenience and efficiency.

The primary living, dining and culinary zones are located the lower level, strategically positioned to capitalize on the taller windows offering views, southward towards the Thames and northward overlooking the green public gardens of Belgravia.
Historically, Georgian homes were meticulously organised to cater to different purposes, emphasising both practicality and aesthetic appeal. Spaces were designated for specific functions, with drawing rooms for social gatherings, libraries for intellectual pursuits, and dining rooms for formal meals. The formal layout of this rooms has been kept in the new design and the openings of each room have been enlarged to facilitate a smooth transition between the rooms, ensuring a seamless flow and effortless functionality.

This comprehensive renovation saw every inch of the space reimagined—from installing new floors and plastering walls to introducing custom mouldings and fittings and with new wood panelling throughout the property. An imposing new staircase, crafted from solid walnut treads and delicate brass balustrades, serves as a stately conduit, linking the two levels through a dramatic double-height void at the apartment's core.

Our primary focus in this project was to blend the enduring elegance of the Georgian era with a contemporary twist. All the bathrooms and walk in wardrobes have been designed with modern materials introducing solid walnut and brass detailing while staying true to the historical charm, we aim to create inviting and light spaces that cater to modern lifestyles.

This approach allows us to capture the essence of both past grandeur and present innovation, resulting in spaces that are both stylish and functional for today's living standards.

To achieve and deliver the high level of detail expected for this project we adopted a BIM model strategy and have meticulously developed drawings at 1:10 scale covering all areas and electromechanical services to ensure a smooth coordination both off site with the consulting team and on site with the contracting team.
