Perched atop a mountain at 40 meters above sea level, the residence we designed for the owner of Columbia Beach Resort occupies the highest point of the property. This cliff-edge home offers unparalleled, unobstructed views of the Mediterranean Sea and Cape Aspro, allowing the owner to immerse himself in the serene and breathtaking landscape.
The design maximizes the site's dramatic location, with all rooms oriented to face the sea. The architecture is integrated with the natural terrain, enhancing the connection between interior and exterior spaces. One of the most striking features of the house is the swimming pool, which extends out over the cliff, creating the sensation of a floating balcony above the rugged landscape below.
Given that the owner divides his time between several residences worldwide, we ensured the interior design aligns with his familiar aesthetic preferences.
The interior design concept for this apartment draws inspiration from Japanese design principles, emphasizing simplicity, high-end craftsmanship, and the maximization of natural daylight. The aim is to create an open, airy living space while ensuring the bedrooms remain connected to the heart of the home. The apartment is constructed within a lightweight steel frame, allowing it to sit seamlessly within the existing garage space without disrupting the car parking area beneath.
The design prioritizes the flow of light, with both bedrooms opening up to the living area and kitchen void. This connection enables natural "borrowed" daylight to filter into these more private spaces, creating a sense of openness and harmony throughout the apartment. A key feature of the space is a series of handcrafted timber sliding doors, which slide open to act as both screens and light filters, providing privacy while allowing ambient light to wash into the bedrooms.
To enhance the visual appeal and warmth of the interiors, a combination of locally sourced wood and wallpaper has been carefully selected. These materials serve not only to soften the overall aesthetic but also to manipulate the proportions of the spaces, making them feel more intimate and cosy. The use of these elements contributes to a serene and balanced atmosphere that complements the minimalist, Japanese-inspired design ethos.
The interior furnishings, both soft and hard, have been curated in collaboration with Thesis Furniture Showrooms, further elevating the space with pieces that reflect the design's focus on quality, comfort, and attention to detail.
The overall effect is a harmonious living environment that combines functionality, style, and a deep respect for natural materials and light.
